Memory of Saint Irenaeus, Bishop, who, as writes Jerome, as child was a disciple of saint Polycarp of Smirna and faithfully preserved the memory of Apostolic times. Ordained priest in Lyon, was the successor of Bishop saint Pothin and, according to tradition, died crowned by a glorious martyrdom. He tried many ways about the Apostolic tradition and wrote books selected to defend the Catholic faith against the heretics of that time (c. 200). Roman martyrology
