James the Greater, Apostle

Patron of Spain. Solemnity of St. James the Apostle, son of Zebedee and brother of St. John the Evangelist, who with Peter and John witnessed the Transfiguration and the agony of the Lord. Beheaded shortly before the Passover feast by Herodes Agrippa, was the first of the Apostles who received the Crown of martyrdom (century I). Roman martyrology
